Dream the Dream

If you think life is over before it's over,
heed the story of Susan Boyle from West Lothian, Scotland.
It's a small village near Edinburgh.
She is 47 and single, with a dream of becoming a singer.

I saw this as it was happening and was blown away by her voice. I'm sure she will really find her dream of being a professional singer after that performance. I got goose bumps as she sang. I have watched it numerous times since it was filmed as it is covered again and again in the news. I get tears in my eyes each time I watch it. Wow!

What a magnificent voice this lady has. I've watched the video over and over since a friend sent it to me. I hope all those people who were rolling their eyes when she walked out on stage have learned a lesson about judging a person by her looks. I hear she's negotiating a recording contract; can't wait to buy her CD. This is the most heartwarming story I've seen in a long time.

Hi Judy and Barbara,

This story interests me a lot. The initial audience reaction was strictly to Susan Boyle's appearance, not to her talent. Says much about how superficial we've become in an age so dominated by visual media.

I tell my students that I grew up in the age of radio. What's the biggest difference from television? they ask. Oh, the pictures were a LOT better, is my response.

The Washington Post has a good followup story on Ms. Boyle's triumph. She's a genuinely deserving person. When asked about why the audience had initially laughed at her, she gave this sensible reply:

"Modern society is too quick to judge people on their appearances," she said. "There is not much you can do about it; it is the way they think; it is the way they are. But maybe this could teach them a lesson, or set an example."
