Boston Charlie

From Walt Kelly's Pogo Website

Of the many ways to express holiday sentiment,
one of my favorites is Walt Kelly's parody
of the traditional English carol,
Deck the halls with boughs of holly.

Kelly's version begins:
Deck us all with Boston Charlie,
Walla Walla Wash., an' Kalamazoo!
The rest you may read at the Pogo site.

And if you want to hear the tune,
here's a scene from a movie we like to see
every year at this time.

Yes, I can still sing it all..
...and how I really miss Walt Kelly's social and political commentary via Pogo these days... He would have had a field day!

I was introduced to Pogo by my dad who loved it. I still have about six of the original $1.00 books which I have kept for about sixty years now - and they are still as much fun. My Prom date also loved Pogo - one of the reasons I asked her (that and Gilbert & Sullivan).
Looking at the drawing I decided that the closest we have to such a collection of characters today are the Jim Henson Muppets (just saw Muppets Merry Christmas last night. Recommended viewing!)

Allan,

My brother David and I loved Pogo in the daily comics section. I can't recall if it was in the Journal or the Register, but probably the latter, since it was the D paper as opposed to R. We also collected the Pogo books, and I shouldn't be surprised if he still has all the copies, since he's quite a bibliophile.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who misses Pogo terribly. Just thinking about what the Pogo clan would have to say about today's political scene is enough to cheer me up until Jan. 20. Well, almost enough.

Thanks for reminding me of "Boston Charlie."
