60th Reunion Details

Hello ’58 SHS Classmates,

The deadline for sending in your reservations for the 60th Class Reunion is quickly approaching.

The deadline is August 25, 2018.

John T. Stapleton


John "Jack" T. Stapleton of Downers Grove passed away on October 24, 2017. Born on March 18, 1940 to the late John P. and Velma (Sebring) Stapleton. Growing up in Springfield, IL he graduated from Springfield High School in 1958.

His work career began as an Engineering Technician for the State of Illinois. He later graduated from Northern Illinois in 1967 and earned a Masters in Educational Administration from the University of Illinois in 1972. A lifelong educator, John served as an Industrial Education teacher and Dean at Downers Grove South High School. He was a long time member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church where he served on numerous committees.

As an active member in the community he served on the Downers Grove Traffic Commission and was a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Downers Grove. John had strong passion for sports which included coaching his son's Little League teams.

He is survived by his wife Nancy of 54 years; daughter Amy L. (Doug) Conderman; son Jon L. (Kim) Stapleton; four granddaughters and one grandson. He is also survived by one sister, Patricia Stapleton, and two brothers, Kevin Stapleton and Mark Stapleton. He was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Kunz, and one brother, Terrance Stapleton.

Visitation will be Friday, November 10th from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Downers Grove. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 11th 10:00 a.m. at St. Andrew's Church, Downers Grove.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church or the Alzheimer’s Association, Illinois Chapter.

Clifton L. Tozer

Clifton L. Tozer, 92, of Springfield, died at 12:10 a.m. on Friday, November 3, 2017 at Concordia Village Senior Living.

Clifton was born February 5, 1925 in Chicago, the son of Ray Thompson and Marie Schultz. He married Dolores G. Stashwick on June 11, 1949 in Chicago.

Clifton earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in 1949 and his master's degree in 1950 in Education. He served his country during WWII in the 5th Division of the U.S. Marines and was wounded in the historic battle of Iwo Jima.

He had a long career with District 186 as an educator, first as teacher, then counselor, assistant principal, and lastly as a principal. Clifton was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, where he served as an Elder. He co-founded the TP Day Camp, a summer camp that had an impact on hundreds of Springfield residents.

After retirement, Clifton volunteered at Habitat for Humanity and Lewis Memorial Christian Village. In recent years, while living at Concordia Village, he started and led a long-running men's discussion group.

He was a life-long athlete, playing semi-pro baseball in Central Illinois in his 20s and golfing until the age of 90. He was known for his ready wit and sense of humor, which sustained him and his family to his last days. He was a humble man who enjoyed the friendship and respect of those who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Clifton is survived by a family who loved and revered him: his wife, Dolores of Springfield; sons, Steven (Victoria Chou) of Oak Park, Randall (Beverly) of Paradise Valley, AZ, and Michael (Gail) of Kernersville, NC; brother-in-law, Tad Stashwick (Carole); eight grandchildren: Jocelyn, Lindsay, Samantha, Sean, Stephanie, Kevin, Jennifer and Alex; and seven great-grandchildren.

Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies. The family will host a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Concordia Village, 4101 W. Iles Ave., Springfield. Please visit boardmansmith.com to offer your condolences.
