Springfield is the birthplace of many foods: horseshoe sandwich, Cozy Dog, Maid-Rite, Ray's Chilli, and Mel-O-Cream doughnuts. For a complete history of this delicacy, and a tour of the modern plant, visit the company's home page.
One item left off its News page: according to today's SJR, the M-O-C shop at 217 East Laurel can't get a full health code clearance. It's had 18 inspections in the last 6 months. Little matters like poo left by rats, cockroaches, ants, flies, and mice. I'll pass on the chocolate-dippers.

Yuck! There go my mouth-watering memories of Mel-O-Cream donuts. Guess I'll have to make do with Congdon's Donuts in Wells, Maine. Just as good, but the restaurant is super clean.

I sometimes still dream about Mel-O-Cream and the donut sales we had.

Fond memories of the Mel-O-Cream donut sales at Lawrence Grade School. There was no additional charge for the mice droppings. It does give new meaning to sprinkles on a donut.

Ooooh, double yuck! Don, you haven't changed a bit.

Sorry! Used to deliver paper cups and the like for my dad to the drive in at 5th or 6th and South Grand (what was it´s name ?????) into their basement. Watched more than once them grinding "hamburger" and seeing it spill over onto the floor and the guy slinging it back into the "mix." Dad always told me NEVER to eat there. So most of the time simply drove the car around and around ... but :-)

Can't visit Springfield without a Mel-O-Cream fix. Guess I'll just have to close my eyes when I go in and sink my teeth into one of those wonderful cream filled donuts. Think we should have some for the reunion? LOL

Well, my favorite Mel-O-Cream donuts are the chocolate old fashioned and the raisin twist. I hate to think how much "junk" I may have eaten!

February 18, 2008. News article in the State Journal Register today reports that Mel-O-Creme is now cleared of all the health department inspection infractions. Apparently the problems arose in the first place because the company was making decisions about moving the main donut making headquarters to another location and they hadn't renovated or updated the old facility. Now the "old facility" is free and clear of health risks. Guess I will go get some chocolate old fashions again! Judy Vicars Van Hagen
During Vietnam war Mel-O-Cream donated donuts to the folks "over there" if one would pay the postage. My sister, Dee Dee (Stephens) Gain would send me a box each month. They were a bit hard by the time they got to me, but when I brought them into the office one of the sergeants would call out, "Hey! The captain's got the donuts!"
I would share them around - they were every bit as tasty as when they started - we just took the time to dunk them to soften them up. Great with coffee!

Lew Striebeck and I spent many hours at Mel-O-Cream! Can still smell the doughnuts!
