Driving in Springfield

Someone named Brody Johnson
has posted on YouTube
a video called
Driving in Springfield, Illinois

The above scene is from a blog called
JeromeProphet
He lives in Springfield, too.
Well, in Jerome, to be exact.

Anyone who lives outside Illinois
and can identify that street
wins a special prize from the editor.

No, not World Series tickets.

Darn, Will! I just had cataract surgery and it´s all a blur. But DID take the "drive" through. Needed Dramamine ... or is that age! HA!

Are you kidding, Will? Every time I go to Springfield I get hopelessly lost! It's like going to a city I've never been to before.

Don't worry, Lee. It'll all clear up soon.

Will,

It is going eastbound on McArthur, at the corner of Ash and McArthur.
Walgreens is on the southeast corner. And, McDonalds is in the middle of the block on the westside of the street.

Will,

Sorry, got my directions wrong, it is NORTHbound on McArthur.

Oh my gosh. I should have said, anyone living outside of Illinois (except for LIBBIE). You have such a fantastic memory of Springfield, you might as well be a native.

OK, I'll have to come through with a prize. To be announced after the September paycheck arrives!

Will, this probably isn't fair since I live in Springfield, but that street is MacArthur Blvd. It is looking South down MacArthur toward the cross street beyond the Walgreen's, which is Ash Street. Janet Kerner

Libbie has the excuse of not living here, but I have no excuse. The picture is "looking NORTH on MacArthur Blvd. toward the cross street beyond Walgreen's, which is Ash Street". Janet Kerner

Yay for you, Janet. I am just amazed that the street is MacArthur. I lived a block from it and used to know it very well. But it's changed a lot over the years, and the major landmarks, of Walgreen's and McDonalds, fooled me completely. Hey, where's the Cozy Dog or Thrifty Rexall? Gone completely, I guess. Sigh. Well, anyway, thanks to Libbie and Janet for taking an interest. Maybe now, someone will write in and say the street is Jefferson heading WEST? --Will

Will, the Cozy Dog is alive and doing well. It is still located on South 6th Street in approximately the same place it was back in the 1950's. It was torn down and rebuilt, but the Cozy Dogs are the same as always. It is a "must visit" for the 50th attendees. As for Thrifty Rexall -long gone. Remember the Strand Theatre on MacArthur near South Grand? It no longer exists. There was rumor that it was going to be turned into a strip mall, but so far nothing has transpired. MacArthur Blvd. has been slowly dying and the association for that area is trying very hard to save it. There are too many auto parts stores and "fast cash" places and it has really hit the skids. Many stores have closed and no one has moved into them to open new businesses. Even the previously named Town & County Bowling Alley recently closed for good. Hopefully things will begin to turn around after MacArthur Blvd. is taken all the way South to Route 72. The work is well under way. Janet

I meant to say the Esquire Theatre on MacArthur Blvd. near South Grand Avenue West. Sorry for the confusion. Janet

Yes, the Cozy Dog is still there, and we visit there everytime we are in town. My new son-in-law, from Sandwich,MA, had his first Dog when he was in town for the fair. He thinks they are better than some he has eaten in MA, and would love to own a franchise. He
was also introduced to a Maid-Rite and thinks about the same. In other words, he likes to eat. He is a chef.

That last comment was mine, and of all things I forgot to put my name. Do you have anymore streets you want identified, Will?

Libbie,

Want you to know that I have not forgotten your victorious triumph here. Tried to send you a gift certificate from Pease's, but their web site store said that Yukon, OK was not in the continental USA! I am trying to teach them a little geography, but so far, no luck! I guess this will teach you to move away from good old Illinois?

Will,

Thanks for your effot, and I can't seem to understand their problem as I have had things sent to me before at my current address. The last time I was in the store on State and Laurel, no one seemed to agree on what the correct prices were for some items. I really didn't expect anything, it was a lot of fun identifying the mystery picture, especially since it was almost in by old backyard.

Excuse the typing mistakes, my new bi-focals are not doing very well.
