Suzanne Lee Boyd moved last year and found this picture in her basement. A little dusty and wrinkled, but what a souvenir: it's of the group that traveled to the East coast in June, 1957 to take in the American History sites between Washington, DC, and New York.
Itinerary: overnight train (with Vista Domes) through the Appalachians to DC, toured the town and Mount Vernon, then overnight boat via the Chesapeake Bay to New York and toured that town. Our leaders were SHS history teachers Ruth McKinnie and Irene Burnette.
Suzi says the teachers could out-walk us all. She recalls going to the NBC studio in NYC and standing outside the windows of the Today Show, with Dave Garroway and the chimp. Then she called her parents, who watched every day, and sure enough, they saw her on TV.
Here is our best rendition of the names. At present, 9 are missing. If you know the people marked ?, please tell in a comment. And add your memories, please. (Click on the picture to enlarge, and see also below.)

I remember that trip because I went. In fact, I roomed with Miss McKinney's daughter. She was from Oregon. I don't remember her first name but last was McKinney.
We are in the third row - she is the sixth from the right and I am the fifth.

FUN!
I recall seeing the "back end" of Marilyn Monroe in front of the Radio City ... premier of Prince and the Showgirl. AS well, the tornado that hit the south end of town the Friday before we returned on Sunday. Found a good portion of South 8th "de-treed," especially the large oak in my back yard that fell on the house and we were told "held the house down."
Sylvia, Thanks so much for your comment. I'm glad to add your name and also that of "Mrs. McKinnie's daughter." I never knew that her Mom was a Mrs. and had a family. --Will
And Lee....that is you, Lee? Can't remember who lived on South 8th, but thanks for your comment, too, anonymous one. --Will
I recognize Bob Schuster between Charlie & Joe. Perhaps the others we don't recognize are from the class ahead of us like Bob. Just recall that I had to go to work and couldn't go...Janet BooHoo!
Looking some more....isn't that Mr. Carter next to C.E.? JB
Darlene Willi is next to Nancy, Row 1,and still trying to figure out who's next to Debbie. The gentleman next to Miss Burnett looks like the Rep., but his name isn't coming to me, yet. In between golf shots on t.v & faces from the past, my brain needs a rest! A great find! Janet
Hi Janet,
Thanks for your help. I added Bob Schuster, Mr. Carter (first name?), and Darlene Willi. Rep. Peter Mack is the dude with a bow tie. The other gentleman, I wonder if he was a U.S. Senator? We now have only 14 blanks, so I think our memories are doing very well. And yes, we all missed you on that trip!
Will
Lee here (there in South 8th, Will)Sorry forgot to identify earlier.
BOB Carter .... he wound up as a dorm "daddy" at ISN(ormal)U. I recall "wondering" then! Still do. Did Bob Carter teach at SHS? He called me in one (or more) time to tell me I should NOT cut classes. I recall saying: WHY? Do not recall his answer. :-)
I believe I should be an "Other."
Another jog, thanks to Lee. I think Bob Carter was doing his student teaching...remember he helped with SC and Miss Carmody...more than likely he was a Social Science major and was roped in by the U.S. History ladies. Lee, I don't remember him at Normal...will have to dig out an old Index. Janet...Lee, any interest in trying to help get our Harvard Park gang together at the 50th?
Will, what a great find! How come all I ever get is death notices with an occasional grandbaby?
From a fellow blogmaster, I know how much work you put into this blog and you are to be commended. That was a good idea posting the picture on the website to offer a larger view. I'll have to remember that. Your name often comes up in conversations about the Iles House Blog and it is amazing how many times I have heard the comment, "He does the blog for our class and he really does a great job!" Keep it up.

Dear Will
What a great way to wake up sunday morning and find your e-mail regarding our 1957 trip to D.C. and environs. Frequently I refer to that trip. I'm sure it was the first time many of us traveled beyond Illinois except perhaps fora trip to St. Louis to see the zoo! I had had my appendix removed just three weeks before the trip but I refused to stay home Among other memories I remember walking to the top of the Washington Monument all the while hoping 1) my mom wouldn't find out about that and 2) that my scar from the operation wouldn't suddenly burst. Another vibrant memory is going to the restaurant/bar Lindy's and ordering a mint julip in NYC. The other one was our trip on The Old Bay Line on the Chesapeake.
Now Dave and I as well as many friends and grandchildren spend quite as bit of time on the bay. We have a 35' Beneteau sailboat, which we keep off the Patapsco River in Baltimore. On July 1 we are fleeing all of our children, grandchildren, community and college commitments to spend almost two months sailing. We'll sail up to Cape May,NJ, then back to the bay with stops in Yorktown and other historic spots, on to Crisfield,MD for their annual huge crabfest and then on down to Florida. I'll probably experience withdrawal symptoms leaving the family but Dave will be in his glory.
Again, many many thanks to you for keeping us all so well informed. And thanks for sharing the picture.

Hey Folks,
Thanks for all the very generous comments. I think we were lucky that Suzi Boyd saved that picture for all those years.
We are having a little disagreement about Lynn Prater. I thought she was in the middle of Row 1, and CE thinks she is in the middle of Row 3. Any ideas?
Will
Dear Will,
I can identify Lynn Prater because she and I were and still are best friends. She is in Row 3 between Kay King and Laurel Loibl. She is not between Peggy McKenzie and Elaine Feir in Row 1.
Sarah Temple Green
Hi Sarah,
Thanks for your comment. You, CE, and Suzi all agree that Lynn is in Row 3. So who is the lovely girl in Row 1?
Also, Suzi says that Gay Logan is on the far right of Row 1, beween Debbie Baker and Darlene Willi.
Will
Dear Will,
I think I can identify the pretty girl between Peg McKenzie and Elaine Feir. The name of St. John or St. James kept popping up in my mind so I decided to read through the names and came across Sandra De St. Jean. Maybe someone else can verify this.
The "Washington Trip", as I call it, is one of the top memories of my high school days. I think how lucky I was to be enable to experience it. I think we all had the time of our lives.
If I'm right, the Bruces invited us all to their home the following year in memory of the trip. What a wonderful event.
Sarah Temple Green
Hi Sarah,
I believe that you are right, so I put Sandra's name in Row 1. Now we have only one mystery face in that row, the girl to the far left, next to Suzanne Lee.
I think Pat Flamm was right, a trip of that length and duration was quite rare in those days. So for most of us, it was a very big adventure. My vivid memory: on the grounds of the U. S. Capitol, the drinking fountains were marked White and Colored. This kid from Lincoln land was shocked.
Again, many thanks for helping to fill in the blank spots in our memories.
Will
